I have owned this DVR for over a year now, and it has done exactly what I needed: transferring old VHS to DVD and fairly simple TV recordings. Yes, I have encountered the same TV Guide issues as many other owners, but have found that ignoring it works fine. Just hold down the timer button for a few seconds and you get a screen where you can setup a recording manually (it takes 30 seconds). Now, if you are a TV fanatic, I can see where you may not be able to tolerate the annoying TVG, but if you are looking for a machine to transfer old VHS and do basic recording, it is just fine. I have to say that I am glad they are removing the TVG and would never want it again!

The quality of church sound systems should not be taken lightly by anyone...the ministry staff, the sound technicians, or the congregation. Church is a place to hear God's word, talk with friends, and to just relax from all the stresses of the outside world. The sound system is one touch point that overlaps all of the groups mentioned above. Either directly or indirectly, sound systems impact every aspect of a ministry.

While the congregation can sit back and enjoy the benefits of a well designed audio-visual system as it makes the music ministry performances and worship messages come alive, there is one group that doesn't get the chance to relax...and it's not the pastoral staff. It's the people sitting in the back of the sanctuary in a little cubicle packed full of dials, knobs, meters, cords, computer screens, and the pressure of making the music and sermon sound "just right." The quality of the sound depends solely on the staff manning the sound booth. It makes no difference if a church has a multi-million dollar system, or just some guitars plugged into a $120 amp. An inexperienced sound guy can make Third Day sound like a high school garage band.

While people in the congregation look at and hear the musicians, the musicians look to and depend on the sound technicians. The "sound guy" is definitely the unsung hero of any well put together church service. Nobody sees the person the back tweaking and twisting little knobs but everyone, without question, is directly affected by that person's performance. Any musician will tell you the importance of having both an expert sound technician, and a top notch sound system.

So, how does a church come to have a well-run sound system? More often than not the sound is run by someone who has offered his or her time to learn and run the system. Looking at a sound board and the sea of complex instrumentation will make anyone understand that to run a sound system well would take a lot more than learning through on the job training. Professional training is paramount if a church desires a confident and expert sound technician. Training a volunteer is also something to be considered. Sound systems are sophisticated, and explaining it in everyday terms is a difficult task. Seriously consider the aid of outside professionals who can not only provide you with the best equipment, but that can install it properly, and that can also train your sound technicians.

While the expert sound guy makes a difference, so does the quality of the churches sound system, the quality of the installation, and the training of the technicians! Do it right and your service will be memorable and moving...do it wrong and your service will be, inaudible, brash and distracting.

Multi-Drive Playback and Recording

I have owned one of these since they first came out in late 2003...This unit still works great for me with one caveat..This model is now rather dated and there is no way to update its firmware...Because of this,it will record on the currently available 8x and 16x DVD+R discs,But if you try to "Finalize" a recording made on one of these discs,it will fail...This unit was made to record only up to 4x discs,which are virtually impossible to find these days...Fortunately,I secured a large number of 2x and 4x discs several years ago and am still using off that supply,However,when they are gone,the only discs I will be able to use are DVD+RW which do not need or use the "Finalization" process..But Also are much more expensive to buy...Also,This unit came out before the advent of HDMI,so if you have a Hi-Def TV,The best option is the Component video connection,and when connected that way,the picture is amazingly good...I also bought one of these for my son at the same time,and he has probably used his more than I have and his still works well too...There are newer models available both from RCA and other manufacturers that would probably be a better choice at this point in time,especially considering the Disc speed issue,But if you find one AT A GOOD PRICE,I would recommend it.!

I bought this one because it claimed it would make a DVD copy of a VHS tape look BETTER than the original tape. Though I couldn't be certain of this most of the time, I can definitely say that the DVD copy of the VHS tape showed NO loss in copy-generation (i.e. the DVD copy looked as good as the original tape). And, on ONE occasion in which I had a poor quality VHS tape (with slight 'posterization'), this unit showed that it WAS capable of making a copy better than the original. My unit only had one software flaw...when copying a VHS tape to DVD, you could NOT rely on the on-screen menu to indicate what 'speed' (SP/LP/EX) would actually/truly be used for the DVD recording. Instead, I had to push the appropriate remote button a few times to make the FRONT PANEL DISPLAY (rather than the on-screen menu) indicate the actual speed of the DVD recording that would be used. Also, after 3 years of fairly frequent use, I'm now starting to get some picture quality 'issues' on the DVD's. But (as recommended in their manual), I'll contact Panasonic to see if they still make the DVD 'lens cleaner' to improve picture quality. And, yes, as others have said, the manual is poorly written and confusing. But all-in-all, if you want to make GOOD quality DVD's from old VHS tapes, this is the unit I'd recommend.

I had this dvd recorder now for about 3 yrs i think & i never had a problem yet as far as recording anyhting. That is recording dvd to vhs & vhs to dvd it works well actually great. Any movie that i burn from my computer the dvd player always plays it. When useing the dvd recorder especially when its vhs to dvd you must finalize it in order to get the disc to play in any other dvd player. As far as the options that i use from this dvd recoreder it has it works awesome & im completely happy with this product. The only reason i didn't give 5 stars cause i haven use every option yet. When i 1st got it i call customer service they were great they showed me the 1 touch quick operation as far as recording & i never had a problem since then

As home theaters increase in popularity, many people are trying to design and layout their rooms on their own with little guidance. Where this can save you money initially, it will inevitably cause heartache and money down the line. Home theater installation requires not only someone with technical know how and an eye for room layout. It also takes an audio expert who knows both what equipment is available and what limitations a room may have. Too often people end up with a system that does not fit their home or needs because they were unskilled in matching speakers and components with the layout and acoustics of a home. A professional installer is trained in all of these areas and can help ensure that the money invested in a home theater will be money well spent.

When looking for a custom installer, find a person or team that is skilled in home theater design and that they are knowledgeable of all of the equipment options which could help transform a basic system into a custom work of entertainment technology. Here are a few things that you should keep in mind when shopping around for an installer.

Business Focus

When choosing a home theater installer, make sure that you find someone who knows audio and visual equipment inside and out. Look at the nature of the installer's business. How to Pick the Correct Projector for Your Home Theater

You're finally making the jump to the holy grail of home theater video displays; the front projection system. There's nothing else that delivers that really big, impressive video image like a front projection system. It's how you get that real cinema experience in your home theater. Home theater projector prices have plummeted in recent years, and the size of the units have shrunk right along with the prices. No more do have to live with a coffin sized box on your ceiling. As sizes have decreased, the image quality and brightness have actually improved dramatically. You'll notice image quality and brightness are two separate issues.

How do choose the correct home theater projector for your application from the myriad of projectors on the market today? There are so many different units, each with their strengths and weaknesses. First of all, there are two main projection technology categories, analog and digital. Analog projectors are based on CRTs, a mature technology that's been around for decades. Those are the projectors with the separate red, green and blue picture tubes and three lenses on the front. The other projectors use one of the newer digital technologies. These projectors have a single lens on the front. There are three major types of digital projectors on the market today; LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), DLP (Digital Light Processing) and LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon). Each type of digital projector has it's advantages too.

You need to evaluate your specific requirements in order to make the proper decision. First of all, look at the room. Is it a dedicated home theater or a multi use room? Do you have complete control of the light? What aesthetic concerns are you dealing with? What is your projector budget? How large of an image do you want? Do you watch primarily DVD movies, TV movies, sports, or other TV programming? What specific source components will you be using with your projector now or in the future? Is picture quality the most important thing, or are other concerns, such as noise, size or brightness more important? Are you installing the projector yourself, or are you hiring a custom installer to do the installation for you? Where must the projector be placed? Can you get the required video and control cables to that location? These questions must be answered to ensure you get the proper projector for your home theater. If you are using a custom installer, they will take into account these factors and specify the appropriate unit for you.

Dramatic improvements in the picture quality of digital projectors notwithstanding, CRT projectors still deliver the most film like image. They have no pixel structure and deliver rich, deep blacks. Properly set up and calibrated, with a good video processor, and with the proper size screen, a CRT projector will deliver simply stunning picture quality. You'll need to use a good quality projection screen, typically with 1.3 - 2.5 gain depending upon the size, viewing angel and ambient light in the room. Prices on really great CRT projectors have fallen like a rock in the last year or two. You can get a 9" CRT projector that used to cost $35,000 to $50,000, for less than a third of that figure now. Many firms no longer make CRT projectors due to the decreased demand for projectors using this technology. In addition, the required video processors have decreased dramatically as well. Ten years ago a great video processor used to cost $10,000 to $20,000. Now you can get one for well under $5,000 and as little as $2,000, brand new. They also easily last 8,000 - 10,000 hours when properly set up.

If they are so fantastic, why doesn't everybody still use CRT projectors? Well, there are many detriments to a CRT projector as well. The best ones, with the 9" tubes, are simply huge. It's like hanging an upside down bathtub on your ceiling. If you want to put one under a coffee table, it'll be one large table. They are also very heavy, around 150 - 200lbs, so you need the proper structure to support them. CRT projectors also require precise placement. They must be perfectly square with the screen, at the correct elevation for good picture quality. In addition, while many digital projectors have zoom lenses, allowing the projector to be placed at a range of distance from the screen, CRT projectors must be at a very precise distance for a specific screen size. These factors severely limit placement options. While the larger CRT projectors put out more light than their smaller counterparts, they have pretty dim images compared to even the least expensive digital projectors. Finally, CRT projectors require specialized setup in order to get a watchable, much less an optimum image. Every 6 months to a year, they must be re-calibrated to ensure you are still getting optimum picture quality.

There are some very good reasons why most people are using digital projectors in their home theaters today. Many are small and light, require minimal setup and calibration (compared to a CRT), are quiet and have a bright, sharp image. But, there are many different digital projectors, ranging in price from around $700.00 to over $100,000.00. Which one is the best for your specific application? Thankfully, the situation is changing, but many of the digital projectors marketed for home theater use are really just re-badged presentation units. Presentation projectors sacrifice good video quality for brightness. Brightness is much more important when giving a Powerpoint presentation in a lit room than the correct color palate or the black level. The red on the pie chart looks great, no matter what, as long as you can see it from the back row.

You want to choose one of the newer units that has been truly designed for home theater applications. The actual technology used for the imaging chip is not all that important, there are great examples using all three of the digital technologies. Companies such as Sony, Runco, InFocus, Vidikron, Marantz, Benq, Panasonic, Sharp, Optima and Sanyo and some others all make great home theater projectors. The projector will have great black levels, to accurately reproduce detail in the darker areas of the picture and give great contrast. Absolute brightness is not extremely important, unless you have a multi-use room without complete light control or you have a lot of people over for sporting events. If you are entertaining many people for sports, it's nice to have some light on in the room, so a brighter projector is advantageous.

Projectors come in a number of different resolutions. The lower the resolution, the smaller the screen you can use before you can see pixel structure. Also, the lower resolutions will not support true HDTV. Most will display HD, but at a decreased resolution. The lowest end projectors typically have resolutions of 800 x 600. The Texas Instruments Matterhorn chip is popular on budget priced wide screen projectors, and has a resolution of 1024 x 576. Anything over a resolution of 720 will allow for true HDTV. The TI series of HD-2 DLP chips has a resolution of 1280 x 720. In April of 2005, TI announced new DLP chips with 1920 x 1080 was ready for production, allowing for true 1080p resolutions. Projectors with this chip will begin shipping in Q1 of 2006. Blu-Ray Disc has stated they will support 1080p, so by late 2006 there will be commercially available 1080p content besides Microsoft's WMHD discs.

Another very important aspect of home theater projectors is the internal video processing. This is one of the primary differences between good home theater projectors and presentation projectors. Digital projectors must display progressive scan images at the native resolution of the chip, so any interlaced signal, such as 1080i HDTV, must be de-interlaced and then scaled to the native chip resolution. Poor quality video processors, weather in the projector or external units, cause all sorts of video artifacts that can get in the way of a satisfying video presentation. This subject alone is too in depth for this article, as entire texts have been written on the subject. However, one common video artifact is "jaggies" where diagonal lines are jagged instead of straight. Another annoying artifact caused by poor video processing is moire'. This is a pattern seen as alternating light and dark lines that change position as the image moves.

You'll want to be sure your projector supports the HDMI or DVI with HDCP copy protection to allow you to connect a HD-DVD, scaling DVD player or Blu-Ray Disc player. These devices will only allow maximum resolution on a display that has a digital video input with HDCP copy protection. In the future, cable TV and satellite providers may restrict the maximum resolution to their digital outputs too.

When choosing your new home theater projector, make sure it has the video quality, brightness, size, auditory and budget characteristics that you need. Projectors are a large investment, choose carefully and you will be rewarded with years of thrilling video in your home theater.

The BD-RE Format's Compatibility With MPEG-2 PS

The stream recording format adopted by the BD-RE Application Format is based on MPEG-2 TS, the format used in digital broadcasts. Digital video recording devices such as DVD recorders use the MPEG-2 PS format, which is not directly compatible with the MPEG-2 TS format. In order to achieve a higher level of compatibility with existing digital video recording devices and to utilize existing video sources, the BD-RE Application Format defines a method for transcoding from a program stream to a transport stream and vice versa. The stream used for this conversion is called the constrained SESF. The Constrained SESF handles 11 TS packets as a single unit called a multiplexing unit. A multiplexing unit holds up to 2048 bytes of valid data and can be converted to a program stream and recorded in a 2048-byte sector.

An SESF capsule is a grouping of video and audio data that consist of one or more GOPs (Group of Pictures) and has been designed to enable playback and editing in units of SESF capsules. A Tip packet and PAT, PMT are inserted at the beginning of the SESF capsule. The Tip packet contains display information such as the aspect ratio of the video data in the stream, CGMS such as the copy control information, and coding information such as the video resolution, and so on. All of this information makes it possible to quickly identify the decoding method before decoding the data. During skip or high-speed playback, video data can be easily decoded by starting playback from the beginning of the SESF capsule. As a medium that records and plays all broadcasts, the BD-RE disc will enable a smooth transition from DVD and other existing recording media.

How To Transfer a Video to a DVD

Depending upon your specific needs, there are a number of ways to transfer video to DVD. In this article, I will discuss three popular ways.

If you have video on your computer, and you would like to burn it on to a DVD, here is how you do it. First, you need the proper tools -- the burner, burning software, and the ability to convert the video files into the proper format. If you have windows, you can use Windows movie maker to edit the video as well, and the burning software to create the video menu, and start the burning process.

Typically, your DVD burner will also have the capability to convert different video files into the right file extensions that are suitable to be burned onto DVD. If not, you may have to download freeware or shareware video conversion programs, or purchase an independent video converter. After you get it into the right file format for your burning software, then it is not simply a matter of starting a the burning process.

If you're trying to transfer video from your digital camcorder, you have two options. First, you can upload the video onto your computer, and follow the directions given above. Or, if you have a DVD recorder, it is much easier. Simply turn on your recorder, and the television is hooked up to. Next, plug in your digital camcorder, and then turn it on.

Put the digital camcorder into playback mode. Then connect a FireWire cable from the output of the digital camcorder into the input of the DVD recorder. Or, you can use analog cables, if no FireWire port is available. Make sure the inputs on your DVD recorder match the ones you're using a new digital camcorder. Then simply place the recordable DVD into the recorder, and began recording.

If you'd like to transfer a VHS tape onto a DVD, then you will need special software. This is because VHS is in analog, and DVD is digital. Is 1080p HDTV Really Necessary?

The world of High Definition Television (HDTV) is full of new technology, new concepts, and new buzzwords. One of the most compelling buzzwords is "1080p", the designation for the highest possible screen resolution available on an HDTV. If you are researching HDTV, you've heard this term many times and might be convinced that owning a 1080p set is essential to your happiness. Maybe it is, but there are several other factors in your purchase that are just as important as resolution.

Let's take a few moments and think about what 1080p really means. The 1080 refers to the number of pixel rows in the broadcast and also in the TV display. The other common resolution standard is 720 pixel rows. Ideally, the broadcast resolution and the display resolution should match, but the TV will make adjustments if they don't.

The letter P stands for Progressive, which means that every 1/60 of a second, a complete image is sent to your TV set. If the broadcast standard is the popular 1080i, that means it's interlaced, so every 1/60 of a second you receive half an image. This is to save bandwidth in the broadcast.

Every HDTV has a progressive display, so when it gets 1080i interlaced content, it sticks two consecutive half-images together, but each whole image takes twice as long to show, and fast-moving sports or movies might look choppy. This is why 1080p HDTVs are something to get excited about: they can accept 1080 rows of pixels, 60 times a second, so they give you fine resolution and smooth motion.

So, that's all well and good- 1080p is obviously better than the other common display standard, 720p/1080i. But that doesn't mean you should give in to the hype just yet. If you're not willing to consider anything but a 1080p set, here are four factors that might make you reconsider:

input source: You will only take full advantage of a 1080p set if you have 1080p input, and this is still fairly rare. 720p input, which you get from broadcast, DVD players, and even most HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players, will look just as good on a 720p set. 1080i input will look a little better on a 1080p set, though, because it won't be adjusted to a lower resolution.

screen size: One result of changing from 720 rows to 1080 rows is that the pixels will be smaller on the same size screen. On sets smaller than 50 inches, the pixels are incredibly small no matter which resolution you have, so there's really no advantage to 1080p on these sets at normal viewing distances.

cost: If you're considering a plasma HDTV for the deep color saturation, high contrast ratios and other reasons, you will really have to pay a premium for a 1080p set. It's nearly impossible to tell the difference between a 720p plasma and a 1080p plasma in the 40 to 50 inch range.

other quality factors: All else being equal, 1080p resolution is better than 720p. But the thing is, all else is usually not equal. Other factors like contrast ratio, black level, color saturation, a high quality signal, and overall quality of the HDTV are actually more important than the resolution of the screen. It would be foolish to choose an inferior and probably more expensive set just because it has one cool feature.

Someday in the future, when HDTV technology is a little more advanced, the 1080p standard will probably be applied in every set, and there will be one less decision to make in the buying process. But for now, it's important to take advice from manufacturers with a grain of salt, and consider all your options.

Other than the fact that this recorder just plain performs, it also has a feature you will not find on any other model from any other manufacturer: Flexible Record. It allows for a variable recording time format. In other words, let's say you want to record a program that is 2 hours and 17 minutes long. With most units you would have to choose the 4 hour recording mode and leave a fairly large blank space on the disc, (some have a three hour mode - not many). With this baby you just press the FR button and a screen pops up where you can set your record time and the unit will adjust the record speed to fill your disc with the best possible recording and no leftover space. I don't think Panasonic, in it's infinite wisdom any longer includes this feature on it's dvd recorders and I for one cannot imagine why. I called them once about it but got no real answer. Go figure! Another thing Panasonic did with this unit was to not put a "tray open" button on the remote?????? What makes this even stranger is the unit will except the command! I know this because I have a remote from a DMR-ES10 and it will work the unit and open the tray. So I don't know why Panasonic decided to leave that button off the remote...I guess they saved a couple of yen. But this is a good recorder. It has a digital tuner and it will record any type of disc out there except Blu-ray.

Understanding HDTV Picture Resolution

Lets cut to the chase. The reason you bought an HDTV or the reason you are planning to get an HDTV is for the picture quality. That's why it's called high definition in the first place is my guess, for high definition picture. But do you really understand what a high definition picture is ? And what is the difference between a TV that displays in high definition and a disk or program that broadcasts high definition images ? This article will explain some of the jargon and help you to differentiate between HDTV and ordinary TV in terms of picture quality or resolution.

Picture resolution on a TV is described by the vertical resolution of the TV. The vertical resolution is the number of lines going from top to bottom that are displayed on the screen. To this extent if a TV has a vertical resolution of at least 720 lines then it is classed as an HDTV. Another measure of the picture resolution is the horizontal resolution. This is the number of lines going from left to right on the screen.

Many TVs, especially plasma and LCD TV's have what is called a fixed pixel display. TVs with older style cathode ray tube picture generation could alter the number of vertical and horizontal lines on a screen. With the new technology this is fixed. The main benefits of this are that each individual pixel is a separate entity that has it's own light and color displays. This lead to better clarity of the overall picture. Also the new TVs have a larger number of pixels on the screen than an ordinary TV. Pixel number in terms of resolution are determined by the number of horizontal pictures times the number of vertical pixels. All home entertainment units have three major components that are essential to creating a functional home theater system. The main focus of any theater is the television or video display. Sound quality is essential. A complete sound system is key to providing the soul and voice of the theatre. A source player is the third element, providing the picture and sound. Cable or satellite TV is standard in most homes but DVD and other players are also added to expand the usefulness of a home theater. It is these three major pieces of electronic innovation that make watching a movie, playing the XBox or listening to a favorite CD enjoyable and worthwhile.

Visual Element

There are video display options available to a home depending on budget and preferences.

Rear Projection Television. Television technology has been based on the cathode ray tube (CRT) up until the 21st century. In a rear projection TV, there are three tubes, each representing one of the primary colors. This colors mix along with quality wiring and a good screen, provide a very high resolution picture. Manufacturers are starting to drop rear project televisions from their product lines however. Research your manufacturer's warranty before purchasing a rear projection television to make sure that customer service and repairs will be available down the line.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Television. An LCD TV can be found as both a rear projection and as a flat screen. LCD rear projection TVs are much more compact than their CRT cousins and use less power. I have written about LCD televisions extensively in other articles so I will forego further explanation here.

Plasma Screen Televisions. In this technology, different gases are trapped between two panes of glass and an electronic signal can modify them to allow them to display a picture. These televisions are produced with a sleek thin design and can produce excellent resolution.

No matter which video display you are leaning toward, make sure to measure the area you want to put the TV so it fits when you bring it home. Also look into whether the screen is able to handle high definition (HD) television and DVDs.

Audio Elements

The sound system is going to make a huge difference in the enjoyment and functionality of your home theater. A good audio system includes the following elements:

Receiver. This component takes the audio signal, and often the video signal, and distributes it to the proper part of your system.

Amplifier. This component is what increases the signal strength before it is sent to the speakers. Often times, a purchased receiver will have an amplifier already built into it, making an additional piece of equipment unnecessary.

Surround Sound Speakers. Standard speaker sets of five are typical for most home theaters. There is a center channel, a right front, right rear, left front and left rear. These different speakers, when properly positioned, make the sound come from the appropriate direction.

Data / Signal Source

A basic DVD player is a standard signal source in most theater systems. The signal information sent from the player contains the video data as well as your 5.1 surround sound. Your cable box or digital satellite is also signal sources for a home theater. These sources can all be used in one system with the proper wiring and remote programming.

This particular DVD recorder/player is known by many names. Funai Corporation, which is the manufacturer of all of them and parent company to some, sells these under numerous brand names, including the Funai brand as well. Some of these are sold exclusively at Circuit City as PYE. Some are manufactured as Sylvania and Emerson. Mine, available only at Wal-Mart, is known by the name SV2000. Even electronics giant Philips has handed over the manufacturing of their Magnovox brand to Funai! So whether yours is known as PYE, Emerson, Sylvania, SV2000, Magnavox, or Funai, we all have essentially the same machine.

As it is, this DVD player/recorder known by many names is a value-priced, budget-friendly wonder found well under the 0 price range. No, it will not go head to head with the 0 plus players like NAD, Rotel, Denon, etc. It will, however, deliver as much performance (and hopefully longevity) as such 0 machines manufactured by Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung.

To begin, all of the standard hookups---as expected---are to be found here (S-video, etc.). The player also has a "substantial" appearance and feel to it. In other words, there's very little plastic here and a whole lot of metal! The remote, on the other hand, is cheap, plastic garbage. The buttons are miniscule and not well laid out. There's nothing ergonomic about it either. With that being said, budget components have to cut their production costs somewhere and this is obviously where Funai has seen fit to cut.

The sound and vision of this unit are spectacular, especially for the price. There is certainly no truth whatsoever that all DVD players perform essentially the same. They do not! This machine, however, delivers the same level of performance as what one could normally expect from a much more expensive player, and delivers a superior performance to the likes of the el-cheapo, "Black Friday" .99 players like Coby, Durabrand, Cyberhome, etc.

I've not had much experience with the recording feature of this unit, but I can at least say that "it works" and does so relatively well. I've not yet recorded from a pay-per-view, but I suspect this would be the best fit since there are no commercials during a ppv movie. Otherwise, owners of a Tivo unit might find a nice complement with this machine since they have the option to go back and edit out commercials and such.

Overall, this is a fine unit that will not break the budget!

I have had the Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS for 3-4 months now. I am very pleased with this product. I have dubbed about 20 VHS to DVD and recorded programs from my cable box to VHS & DVD. I have been very pleased with the ease of use and quality of the recordings. It is important to follow the directions in the manual carefully on page 50 & 51 for DVD/VCR Dubbing and page 32 on "Finalizing". The first couple I attemted to Dub, I had difficulty with until I closely followed the steps on those pages. Once I got the hang of it, it's a breeze. To make multiple copies of VHS home movies on DVD to share with family, it is much faster to dub the VHS to a finalized DVD, then copy the finalized DVD on the computer from my internal DVD drive to an external DVD drive. This method takes only a matter of minutes. Thus far, I could not be more satisfied with this product. I am glad I made the purchase and have successfully been able to convert my home movies to DVD for sharing as well being able to preserve some old favorite recorded VHS programs.

I work at a transfer studio and we use this DVR to copy from VHS and I use it at home to record my favorite tv shows. It can be used with a converter box. I like that you set the time to record you can enter up to 8 separate days and times to record. The product is very easy to use, very easy to set up. I also like the different recording speeds, you have about 4 choices.

Its a very faithful and good product. I got mine refurbished about 1 month ago and the one we have at work we have had for a long time and gets a beating but it works like a dream.

I would definitely recommend this product to friends and family.

I love this Combo. We got it in late 2006 refurbished for , I have it in my nice looking basement where we light a fire in our wood stove during the Winter. We watch DVDs and VHSs all the time on it. I record DVDs like crazy on it. It weighs at least 10 to 15lbs, little heavier than normal. It's been giving me some trouble this past month not reading Magnavox -r DVDs after they're done recording and finalizing. I ordered a Maxwell DVD cleaner and a Sony VHS wet Head cleaner, hopefully that will fix the problems and make it like brand new again. If not, I'm going to open it up and clean it myself. Other than this, it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOTALLY GET IT!!!!!! (Refurbished though)

I'm not sure why a previous reviewer had so much trouble, but I found that recording from DVD to VHS was not difficult at all. It does require a few steps to make sure you have the settings you want but you shouldn't have to change them after that unless you change you mind about how to record things. The one thing you probably do need to do every times besides hitting dub is to pick the recording quality which effects the amount of time you DVD can record for, but that can be done with one button on the remote very quickly.

Recording from the TV was trivially easy- like recording to a VCR.

Recording from a video camera (not using fireware- the old fashioned way) was not difficult, though it required a manual consult to figure out how to change the DVD input channel.

My main complaint is sometimes it's not intuitive which menus and button functions will only work in certain modes. For example, you can't change the DVD recording quality in VHS mode (I understand that makes some sense, but in an interface a one-use button shouldn't really change behavior, only multi-function buttons). Also, you can only pull up the menu to manually finalize the disc if you start playing the movie, it doesn't work if you have it in the title screen. This seems like sloppy user interface testing.

Still, if you want to dub VHS to DVD or record tv to DVD I would definitely say this will do the job. The DIVX capabalities are also a big plus in my book.

I bought my RDXS34 on Dec 31, 2005, almost 3 years ago. Nearly took it back a dozen times the first month I had it, but I persevered, and am really glad I did. It is a workhorse, and still is going strong (knock on wood). I give it 5 stars, though I do understand the frustration expressed in a lot of these postings. I had a heck of a time trying to decipher the manual, which as some have said, WAS poorly written, cause it did leave out instructions on several things, including how to manually record. So, I did what the paper with the stop-sign said to do, I called the 800 number. Every time I had a problem. When I had trouble getting through, I kept trying. Mostly I got through after a few tries, if not on the first try. The techs at Toshiba were very helpful, and the dozen or so times I was tempted to return it to the store (or throw it out the window!), instead I called and got the answer that wasn't in the manual (that I could find...). Yes, you can set the manual recording speed, thru the Setup key. In Setup, under "DVD recorder operation", choose "user record quality", then choose the bit rate by using the "frame adjust" arrows. I choose LP as both HDD and DVD defaults, which gives more than a decent picture quality, and allows, upon transfer to disc, up to 4 hours and 13 minutes to a disc. SP cuts that in half, so I use it only when setting a manual recording for a movie or a special event that runs under 2 hours 7 minutes, total after editing. I change it rarely, only when I want to manually (pressing record) record something in SP using pause to edit out commercials. Afterwards I have to remember to change it back to LP, or everything I record by thumb will be in SP, and being a news junkie, that's Not Good!!

If like me you have no patience to wait endlessly for TV Guide to upload, YOU CAN manual record by pressing the TV Guide button and using the r/l arrows to move to the "schedule" subheading, then press the Menu button next to the TV Guide button, which will give you your recording options ("new manual recording" or "new manual reminder"), then just enter the date, time, channel (and you can set the recording speed you want, regardless of what you've got in the setup menu, it overrides that), etc, then set your cable box accordingly or use the link that comes with the unit which, when placed properly, will send the signal to the cable box to change the channel at the appropriate time. I prefer to set the recording timers on my cable box (a Scientific Atlanta) cable box, that way the box doesn't have to be on all the time, and I find it more reliable, as sometimes, mysteriously, the signal has not been accepted properly, and, for instance, channel 421 becomes channel 1 and I'm stuck with a useless recording of my cable company's advertising channel (DRECK!! And, in FRENCH!!) But this is a rare occurrence, it just happened one time too many on something I really wanted to see, so I don't rely on the link anymore.

Also, sometimes I put in a disk to copy to which has a few episodes of something already on it, but is not finalized, and the recorder won't read the disk, and It gives the message that disk is dirty or defective, or that "this operation cannot be performed with prerecorded content". I discovered, by researching online at CNET, a helpful posting by someone who said his did this a lot, and that usually opening the door and reclosing it, and holding the power button while the disc is reloading will reset the machine to read the disc properly. Most of the time this works. One caveat, though, make sure your HDD is not more than 80% full, or that it doesn't have a lot of older titles (none over 7 weeks is my standard), which can destabilize the hard drive, before attempting this. I have never lost content by doing this, but it is possible to completely wipe out the contents of the hard drive doing it. By then of course, it is only a matter of time before it flushes while performing a perfectly normal operation. I have had it happen a different way each time, 6 or 7 times. Once by inserting a severely scratched brand-new (damaged in the pkg) pre-recorded DVD. And one time it happened when everything was no more than 4 weeks old. But that was my fault, something I recorded from an unstable source destabilized the HDD, and I knew it. Since then I record onto DVDs when I'm not sure of the quality of the source. I have lost all my HDD content about 6 or 7 times in 2 and a half years, so all in all that's pretty good. But it is kinda crushing when it happens. I have learned the hard way to back up anything I really would hate losing to a DVD-RW, Verbatim makes a 30 disc spindle, and they are awesome when you can get them on sale. I use post it notes on them so I can reuse them, because whatever you write in Sharpie will stay on them.

The machine is sensitive, and you have to use common sense, but isn't that so with everything? Once you know how to operate it, it becomes fairly intuitive. I'm still learning (small) things to this day. It has so many features and extras, you will never learn all of them, but I'll settle for nearly all. The machine suits my purposes, and I will never go back to cumbersome and boxy VHS tapes. And, bonus points for no subscription requirement!

Hope this helps someone out there!! It's a great machine when you learn thru the manual and the 800 tech support how to use it properly. As Neil Young said, "long may you run", old friend. I think the song was about a car. :o)

This unit works great for US use. It comes default setting with PAL but it is easily switched to NTSC (page 119 of manual) on the unit press "input select" & "stop" buttons together to switch between the two formats. I have been using it for 10 days now and am very comfortable with it's editing operation. It automatically detects commercials and inserts markers for you so you can go right to that point to delete out commercials no searching necessary. This feature really saves hunting time for the start/end points. Then when you need to put in a title you can use the remote like a phone key pad but all you need to do it connect a pc keyboard to the USB and it automatically brings up another window for typing in the title. The unit automatically detects the power you need foreign or US just plug it in the wall using the ac adapter for the cord that comes in the box. Quality of the picture is very good. The 250 GB hard drive gives you plenty of room for collecting movies etc. for editing later. It has digital audio,also printer capable. It is supposed to be able to connect with your PC but I as yet can't get that to work with either of my pc's. If you have any technical questions about this unit you can call Pioneer at 1-800-421-1404 . They cannot answer any questions about the 660 but you can ask about the DVR550HS they do support that one in US and it's operation is very similar but keep in mind it is not the same . I have owned three DVR's now 1SONY 2 Panasonic's and the Pioneer is by far the best unit I have used. It's editing ability makes it fun to use, I really enjoy it. I highly recommend it. Remember for US use when you first turn it on you will see video that is out of sync, don't let that bother you just switch it over to NTSC as explained above.If you call tech support # above they can verify for you this unit will operate in the US even though it was designed for Canada. I'm using mine with Directv so I'm not concerned about the tuner or EPG (tv guide). Its the same as th DVR650hs

I use this to watch the over the air channels using a rabbit ear antenna. Since I accidentally let time pass and could not use the Gov't coupon card, I would have spent + for the converter box anyway. The picture quality is fair/good. Now, the important stuff- Use the Recommended Disc's only! It is Very picky on the disc recording manufacturer. Also,once a Movie, TV Show or personal Cam-Cord recording is copied-this unit will Force you to name the Next recording number/segment. It always assumes that there is space for another recording. Before and once Finalized,the menu will display an -unused/non-titled- segment. As odd as that sounds, I called their customer service people and they told me the same. That is the only real pain in the butt problem I found with this product. If not for that and based on the cost I would have assigned a 5 star rating.

The Sylvania DVR90DEA DVD Recorder is an awesome machine and possibly the best refurb electronics deal I have made in a long time. I have the machine hooked directly to my cable box with the RCA's and then out to my little 15.4" Panasonic HDTV. I learned the hard way that recording from the RF cable will only give you a mono signal. Most cable stations, with the exception of many or all of the local Buffalo, NY channels, are broadcasting in stereo. I notice a slight ground hum, but that could be my cable box or my cabling.

I use Ritek 8x and Taiyu-Yuden Premium 8x DVD-Rs and they work fine. I think out of 50 or so discs, I had one coaster. This unit is very touchy with DVD-RW discs. Most DVD-RW brands will not work on this machine, possibly because this unit was made in 2004 and the RW discs made these days just aren't compatible. I'm not that much of a techie, but I suggest you check out some of the other reviews of this unit here regarding what RW discs to use.

The signal quality is excellent at SP and just about as good in LP mode (2 hour and 4 hour respectively). I do not recommend using a slower speed than LP unless you are just recording a game or something you will not want for posterity. Also, I do not recommend an attempt to use two different speeds on the same disc. Some of my favorite movies exceed 2 hours, so having LP speed comes in real handy and the machine does a great job at this speed.

Timer recordings are very handy and the machine works very well. Just be very careful that you set the AM and PM right. I recommend starting 1 minute before the actual program comes on, even if you have set the machines internal clock to atomic time. Some stations are notorious for starting shows a little early. Also, set your end time at least a minute after the show ends. Some shows are actually 61 minutes long. The same is true for movies. Check [...] for exact end times of your favorite movies and keep in mind the times will be longer on channels that insert commercials into movies or shows.

The machine will power up by itself and load the blank disk about a minute or two before the timer recording starts. There is a barely noticeable fan noise in the back of the unit, but it's quiet.

The magazine-style user manual is a big one, but easy to read and very thorough. Tech support at Funai, which is free, is awesome. I called them pretty late in the evening last month to find out about how to get a stereo signal and they were very helpful. I called them another time to ask about DVD-RW issues and while they could not recommend a brand, they did explain about compatibility issues with this recording format with the new disks.

Notes:

Since the unit is 5 years old, it does not have a HDMI connection. You can have up to 3 RCA or component connections to the unit, 2 from the back and 1 in the front. Handy if you want to transfer some video from your camcorder, another DVD player, etc. DO NOT LOSE YOUR REMOTE as you will need it to set your timer recordings and finalize disks.

For those of you who have not recorded with DVDs before, you must "finalize" your disk before you can play it on another machine. It's very easy to do (just a click on the set up disk option) and takes about a minute or so. If you have enough space on your DVD-R, you can record up to whatever is left on the disc. For SP speed, DVD-R's give me 2 hours and 2 minutes worth of content, LP 4 hours and 4 minutes. I usually always double up movies if I am using LP speed.

This machine only has an analog tuner, so you will need to hook it direct to your cable box and then out to TV. Also, you will have to change channels on your cable box before setting your timer recording. You cannot watch another channel while recording as this is only a basic DVR, but it's an awesome machine.

Best I ever spent! I have found that buying refurbs is the best way to go, as then you know the machine has been tested to run at spec. I advise you to buy extra warranty coverage. Look into that as with an older machine, it's always best to be safe than sorry.

I don't see how you can go wrong if you like to record shows or movies to watch later. This machine is a great little workhorse and Sylvania (Funai) stands behind their products, so expect decent quality.

Very happy that I got to archive my old home VHS to DVD with great results.

Great features:
This is an excellent entry-level DVD-recorder. The TV Guide feature is the reason to past over Panasonic cheaper brother the E55s which just have the VCR-plus feature. TV Guide is a simpler and free version to TiVo. It has an on-screen menu of the channels including title, time, info and the option to record. Sadly, TV Guide feature only work for antenna broadcasting and basic cable. Digital cable and satellite users might have to invest more money into a TiVo recording device (lack of component input here).

The recording quality is great, which is almost the same or lesser then the original, but never better. I transfer old VHS home video to this device and it was easy with excellent quality. Recording TV programs through the antenna is simple, but the quality depends on your reception. DVD-r is more common then DVD+r. I use XP or SP mode (1-2hrs) for VCR transfer, and LP or EP mode (4-8hrs) for TV program.
This is one of the most intelligence video devices I have own yet. There are so many option and setting to configure base on your needs. The SD card reader is a nice extra for this device. I have a Panasonic digital camera with a SD card so it is just plug and play. The manual is simple to follow and understand to figure this complex device.

The have not:
As an entry level recorder would mean this device have less of the advance input features. There are no component inputs which mean you can't recorder from higher quality image. No DV(firewire) input for newer digital camcorder. No hardrive for mix and match recording. The recorder is a 4-stars but the DVD playback is a 3.75-stars. The progressive scan has a lot of settings to customize from, but my Toshisba's DVD is a little smoother. The basic DVD-playback feature is just basic and limited. The old Toshiba has many features as zoom, slow forward, display length of the DVD, which I have yet figure/found. Slow boot time, but that is true to most recorders.

Panasonic quality is great. I have a Panasonic's HDTV for almost a year, a digital camera and they all are working fine with great results. I like Panasonic's pricing which is producing great quality for the price, but they leave out some of the more fancy features and style that Sony has that will jack up the prices. I use Verbatim's Digital Movie DVD-r at 4x and Panasonic's DVD-RAM, anything faster like 8x does not seem to work.

I would have given it a "5 star" rating except I could never get it to playback store bought DVD's in DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1.
But... I have made over 100 DVD+/R recordings and they all play back perfectly in DD 2.0. Most receivers will allow DD prologic I or II and DTS neo:mode for playback in surround. I made them mostly for my laptop for traveling which I only listen to via stereo headphones anyway. I also recorded many NFL games in HD during the course of the season (DVD+/RW) and even at the M3 recording level they were dooable - all erased just fine for the following weeks games. I would reccomend only an M1, M2 or M2x for anything you want at DVD quality. it starts with the source - I only record HD source material and a few items from my camcoder. The better the source - the better the final product. I use the Phillips DVD+/R blanks exclusively.........

I bought this unit back in April-2009 for the sole purpose of transfering home movies from VHS to DVD before they deteriated, or for that matter, the dreaded tape Break. Just to have someone transfer a home movie over to DVD was running me for the first 2 hours. I have 13 to transfer, you do the math. I looked everywhere: walmart, sears, k-mart, target, costco..... either they didn't have what I was looking for, ie: out of stock, or they just do not have it, any more. As I knew that VHS was on it's way out, and DVD is here to stay, or for at least a minute, I began my serch online. There wasn't much to offer within my budget, I seen this Sony and checked out the reviews. After reading the reviews, I figured on getting a Refurbished/Recertified, thinking maybe I will get lucky with one that got returned by a dissatisfied customer. Got a 3 year warranty from Square Trade, just in case I didn't get lucky, and in the 4 months of owning it, I have been able to transfer most of my home movies over to DVD, with NO problems at all. It helps to read the booklet. The playback is just as good as the original. I have played Copy Protected movies, in both VHS and DVD, and both play fine. I realy like the 2-way touch dubbing from VCR to DVD or for that matter, DVD to VCR! ( NON COPY WRITTEN MATERIAL ONLY ) So far in the short time of owning it, I have Not been Disappointed. Adding, after reading the reviews, it has performed better than I had expected.
